I took a zero day today.
I woke up pretty early… 6:30 I guess. I did laundry. I played Wordle and Quordle and Octordle. I ate dry Cheerios and a mandarin orange out of my food bag, because the two restaurants on either side the saloon don’t open for breakfast.
I packed up all my dry bags and took them downstairs and sat outside in front of the saloon. That was around 9 o’clock. Peggy Pierrepont was going to pick me up and we planned to hang out together for the day. But she had an appointment from 9 to 10 AM. I just sat outside in front of the saloon to wait.
After a while a man came out taking out the trash.
He said: “ Are you Leland?“
I said: “Yes.“
“I’m Andre.“
He extended his hand and I shook hands with him.
I asked: “ Are you the owner?”
He said: “ I own it for now. Later, it will belong to someone else.”
I took the room key out of my pocket and handed it to him. He took it. I assumed I was checked out now.
The saloon opens at 10 o’clock in the morning. There were three regulars waiting for it to open. (I knew they were regulars because yesterday they were in the bar when I arrived at noon). When Susanna, the bartender, got there and unlocked the door, they followed her in and and she served them their beers.
Shortly after the bar opened I got a text. It was from Peggy telling me that she was on the way.
Peggy took me on a tour of the town looking at old mansions. Peggy’s house is an old house. It’s a beautifully maintained home, built in 1832. Then we drove 22 miles north, back toward Vicksburg, To have lunch at the Old Country Store Restaurant in Lorman, Mississippi. It is a Buffet with fried chicken as good as any I have ever eaten. The owner/cook came over to our table and sang a song to Peggy.
In the afternoon I stayed at Peggy’s house and rested while she was out taking care of her horses.
My daughter, Tracey arrived around 5:20 and took me back to her house in Hammond, Louisiana. It’s about a 2 Hour Drive. For dinner we had chicken curry cooked by my grandson, Darryl (Beau) Bubrig.
I’m taking five days off the river while it is so hot. During this time I will retrieve my car from Mike Bohannon’s house in Dyersburg Tennessee. I will resume my paddling on Sunday. I will write more then.
A prettty good zero day with new friends, family, much needed rest and delicious Southern fried chicken…yum! 😊
