Wednesday
We are at Island Point campsite.
We started our day with pancakes and bacon. I also had two perfectly cooked eggs, tomato juice, and coffee. Judy Vroom is a wonderful cook. She has an open pantry in her kitchen, as do I in my kitchen. The shelves are only 1 can deep so you never have to wonder what is in the back.
We got some selfies from their deck with the river in the background. Ron and Judy helped us haul our gear to the boats.
I turned over trying to get into my kayak from their dock. I thought I was a little cold until I got submerged like a Baptist. Then I found out I wasn’t as cold as I thought. I stood in waist deep water and pumped it out. Then sponged the rest. I got in from the water. I didn’t turn over that time.
We went 8 miles today. We had one portage around a dam. Below the dam we had to walk and lead our boats. We didn’t get to paddle very much between the dam and island Point.
Island Point does not have an adequate landing. The marked landing is inaccessible because of mud. We were able to “beach” our boats on some big rocks. Then we had to lug our gear up a really high (and steep) embankment.
After we had dinner we didn’t have a good way to wash our pans and spoons. The shelter is on a hill above the river and the climb is real steep. Besides that, the shore line is so muddy we didn’t want to try washing there. We sure didn’t want to use our precious drinking water. We decided to use some of our flushable wipes.
