Day 111
September 28, 2022
Wednesday
LRM 257
2038 miles completed
I paddled 20 miles today.
I got a late start this morning. I didn’t get started paddling until 9:25. I had to dry out my sleeping bag. Yesterday the sleeping bag got wet inside the boat. I have been using the dry bag that came with the sleeping bag but all of the vinyl was cracked and peeling on the inside of the bag. I’ve had that bag since the 1990s. I had a miserable night last night with the wet sleeping bag. The temperature dropped into the 50s. I had to get up in the middle of the night and put on dry clothes. Last week I was complaining about the heat and this week I’m complaining about the cold.
Now I’m gonna complain about the wind. The wind came out of the NNE at 15 miles an hour. The stretch of river I was on was going Northeast for 12 miles. It took me until almost 1 o’clock to get to the point where the river turns southeast.
Now that I had the wind behind me the following seas were getting on my nerves. I thought I might get seasick. I had the splash skirt on but water got in the boat anyway. I was so beat from fighting all morning that I only got eight more miles. I stopped at 4 o’clock.
I won’t get through Baton Rouge tomorrow as I had hoped. I guess I will run the gauntlet on Friday.
The sunset was very colorful. Maybe with this wind I won’t have a problem with the mosquitoes. Right now the flies are biting my ankles. I guess I better get in the tent.
