Day 12 on the Mississippi River

Thursday

Island Point campsite

We sat out the rainy day.

Island Point has two shelters and an outhouse. The outhouse has a seat with lid, and soft toilet paper. The toilet paper roll was mutilated on the surface. Maybe some mouse was lining his nest. This made it impossible for me to determine immediately whether it was over or under. Terry later found the end and reported that it was an over. Score one for Leland, zero for Mary Ann.

The rain finally got here around 10:00 am. We were really glad that we stayed here another night, and didn’t paddle 14 miles in a cold rain to reach the next available camping spot.

About 1:30 pm Fireman walked by pulling his kayak. He didn’t stop…only waved. Where had he been for three days? We were pretty sure the next possibility for camping is Star Island. That’s 14 more miles!

We will get there tomorrow.

We salvaged some trash left by previous campers. We made a pot stand for cooking out of a discarded metal container. Terry cut three inflatable cushions off of a blowup raft. I will use one for my kayak seat. Terry will use one for a pillow. I used the other for a seat on the shelter floor.

It’s still raining.
