Day 25 on the Mississippi River

September 15, 2021

Wednesday

Palisades

Berglund County Park

RM 1086.5

255 miles completed

We paddled 15 miles to Palisades.

The weather was great. The sky was clear, the sun was warm, and the wind was not too bad. We encountered several more low water rapids. We got through them without any serious damage. There is very little current now.

After we got to Berglund campsite and rented a camping spot we put our portage wheels on our boats and pulled the boats to the campsite.

Rick Barta is staying in touch with us and has offered his help as far as Aitkin. So far we have been ok. We got a few things at the convenience store…just enough to get us through to Aitkin. Rick is planning to help us find a grocery store when we get there.

We ate at Gabby’s. I think all this paddling and just eating normally has suddenly caught up with me. I was really hungry! I had the special for the day, an Italian chicken sandwich with potato salad. I have never before had a sandwich that tasted that good. Then I ordered a chicken strips basket with tots to go. I went by the convenience store next door on the way back to the campsite. I bought cereal, peanut butter, Ritz crackers, and beef jerky. While I was putting these in zip lock bags I ate some of each: I had two pieces of beef jerky, four Ritz and peanut butter sandwiches, and several handfuls of Raisin Bran. Then I ate my chicken strips and tots, with a cup of strong black coffee. By then I was starting to feel satisfied.

We got our shower but not laundry. We hope to do laundry in Aitkin.

I gave myself a haircut with Terry’s clippers and Terry’s help…sort of a military look.

The weather was uncertain for overnight. We put our tents in a camp space near the pavilion so we could get under it if it storms.

We filled all our water jugs from the “City Water” faucet at the wash station. The water was a little bit brownish. We let it run a while and re-filled. It was a little bit better better, but not much.

It started to sprinkle a little so we got in our tents.
