Day 51 on the Mississippi River

October 11, 2021 Monday

Tent camping at Goose Island Campground

RM 692

650 miles completed

We paddled 3 miles to Goose Island Campground. We got there at 9:00 am and the office didn’t open until 10:00.

We selected a campsite and unloaded some stuff. We plugged in some electronics for charging.

I had been in touch with a river angel, Roberta Rathert, on Sunday. She recommended Goose Island for shower and laundry. We needed to re-supply and she volunteered to help us with that. When we finally got to Goose Island Monday morning I sent her a message and she came over and took us to eat breakfast at Rosie’s Cafe, in La Crosse.

Rosie’s is great! We had already eaten camp breakfast but we ate again. We can eat all the time and still lose weight. And it seems I’m always hungry.

After breakfast Bobbi (Roberta) took us to Walmart and waited in her car while we bought food. She took us back to camp and invited us for dinner that evening at a Mexican restaurant.

We spent the afternoon cleaning, showering, and doing laundry.

Later in the afternoon Curt

(Curtis) Hottinger stopped by our campsite for a visit. Terry and Curt became acquainted the day before while Terry was in his canoe hiding from the waves behind a dock at Riverfront Park. Curt is a kayaker and is now following us on Facebook. I am really glad to have met him. He is quite an interesting fellow.

After all our laundry was finished Bobbi came back and took us to dinner, as promised.

She brought Ilene with her. Ilene is Bobbi’s grandson’s other grandmother. They have a very interesting story: they raised their grandson together. Their grandson is now in college in LaCrosse. I’m sure they are really proud of him.

We had a great time getting to know Bobbi and Ilene.

It rained all afternoon and into the night. The rain stopped around 10:00 or 11:00. That’s about the time a raccoon ran off with Terry’s bag of apples. I chased him and he dropped the bag, but he got away with one apple.
