Friday
Coffee Pot Landing
I woke at 5:30 and lay in my bed writing and editing my log entries. I write them and save them on my phone. We hadn’t had cell service for two days and I hadn’t post anything for three days. The only communication we had was the two canned messages on the SPOT tracker: either “I’m ok” or “ I’m stopping here.”
We started the day with a little beaver dam. We didn’t have to get out of our boats. We had several more beaver dams, a lot of rocks. The rapids are playing havoc on the bottom of my fiberglass kayak. I am really glad I put an extra layer of fiberglass on the center line before I left home. We also had “significant vegetation” and lost the channel a couple of times.
It rained most of the day. We stopped under the bridge at county road 5 to take a break. As we were leaving the bridge I heard a woman’s voice calling: “Leland!”.
I thought I imagined it. Then I heard it again and I thought maybe my girlfriend had come to get me, or it was God calling me and she was a woman. It wasn’t God, but it was an angel.
Janet Rith stood in the pouring rain on that bridge and told us she would meet us at Bear Den with anything we need. We said we needed water. She added four hot burgers, two nut bars, juice, tea, and hot coffee, She met us at Bear Den and let us warm up on her car. She also gave us a lot of information about the river and the other angels. What a wonderful woman! Terry says: “You never forget your first angel”.
We actually got into double digits for the firs time. We won’t repeat that tomorrow.
We are in the shelter at Fox Trap.
