Wednesday
Hammock camping on Beaver Island
RM 516
836 miles completed
The wind and waves were pretty bad.
Terry texted me that he was 10 miles from the dam and is waiting out the wind and waves at Spring Lake. That was around noon. I cleared the lock and dam at 11:30. So that means he was about half a day behind me and catching up until he stopped.
I paddled 13 miles today. I fought hard for the 7.5 miles to get to Lock and Dam 13.
A guy working the lock told me I could get food and beer right on the river at Starlight restaurant in Clinton. I fought hard to get the 4 miles to the restaurant.
I had a really nice lunch. I had a Big Salad and added shrimp. Onion rings finished filling me up.
I walked to the grocery to re-supply. It was close to a mile.
By the time I got back in my Kayak there wasn’t much day left, but the wind had died down so I decided to take advantage of the break in the wind. As soon as I started paddling it started to rain. By the time I got my raincoat and skirt on I was wet all over, even inside my hip waders.
I found a suitable campsite in a little over 3 miles.
Terry may catch me tomorrow.
I built a fire and dried out.
Supper was Ritz crackers with peanut butter and summer sausage I had packed this morning and didn’t eat because I ate at Starlight.
The moon was bright and the sky was partly cloudy.
