Day 7 on the Mississippi River

Updated: Sep 24, 2021

Saturday

I woke at 6:30. I was really stiff and sore. It was raining. The forecast was for rain and thunderstorms. After the cold and wet day we had just experienced we didn’t feel like doing it again so soon. We relaxed and discussed what to do. We have six miles of likely impassable grass.

Janet Rith suggested we move to Pine Point where we can get a look at what lies ahead. The “impassable” six miles starts there.

We talked and collected rain water. We took a nap and woke around 2:00 pm and the sun was shining. We decided to take Janet’s suggestion. We didn’t very much difficulty paddling the three miles to Pine Point. There were a few places where we had to part the grass. Pine Point is on an old channel that loops around and rejoins the river a few hundred yards away. I tried the first opening and got stuck after 20 or 30 yards. I ran into a solid wall of cattails. Terry tried the second entrance and got through. I couldn’t turn around. I managed to back out and I got in at the second entrance.

Pine Point has a shelter up on a hill near the landing. We had to do a lot of cleaning of the shelter, but we are now comfortable and protected from the weather. There is a possibility of thunderstorms tonight.

We are rested, cleaned up, and ready for our run at the impassable grass tomorrow.

Remember…just like “Going On A Bear Hunt” y'all have options! If you can’t go over it, if you can’t go under it or if you can’t go through it…you can always go around it! 😊🐻🛶
